Artist Statement
My inspiration is the world around me. The shapes and forms that are present in nature and those that are left by people. I am interested in the history of a place and its archaeology. I’m fascinated by layers in how we experience. In looking at a piece of art no two people will bring the same meaning to it, as our own experiences are multi layered. I look to bring some of the nature of this to my work. In the history and development of the painting, which can be seen in the marks and textures.
Lin works intuitively beginning with playful mark making including words and poetry, and a variety of materials including acrylic paint, acrylic ink, pen, pencil crayon, oil pastel, collage. Lin works on a variety of surfaces including wooden panel, canvas and paper. Materials are applied freely and loosely and the process of play continues until forms begin to emerge. As Lin is inspired and interested in nature and history these forms may resemble buildings or landscape. From this start Lin will develop her compositions seeking to stimulate and interest the viewer through the use of exciting differences in value, colour and texture. Works are finished using satin varnish for protection and a coat of cold wax to give a soft burnished sheen.
Lin Cheung is a mixed media abstract artist living in Buxton. She works from a studio on the top floor of her house filled with natural light and giving stunning views over the town and hills of the Peak District.
Her love of art began at school with ceramics. Lin kept a light touch with her creativity while she developed her business career as a psychotherapist. Following a holiday workshop in the Isles of Scilly which reinvigorated her love for art she has been painting consistently for about the last nine years.
As she says: “I had reached a point of recognising that whilst I do find my therapy work to be creative I began to feel like I wanted a different experience in my life and that that I wanted to express my creativity in other ways. Rediscovering my love of art was probably one of the most important recent developments in my life”
Over the last nine years Lin has devised a programme of artistic development for herself. She has taken workshops with a variety of artists, some international. She has explored new techniques and materials and researched through reading.
“My paintings reflect my expanding interests. I moved from painting in oils, to using acrylics, and then to mixed media. Throughout this time there has also been a movement towards firstly loosening up as an artist, and them becoming increasingly interested in abstraction, which is where I have found my home.”
Drawing on her skills in personal development and psychology Lin is also a creative coach and teacher. She works with people on a one to one basis or in small groups for coaching and runs workshops in abstract painting.
