Brookfold Artists - 41

Location: Chapel en le Frith, High Peak / Genre: Glass, Paintings, Prints, Textiles.

Artist Statement

Three professional local artists, all members of New Mills Gallery:

Linda Moss uses the wool of her own sheep, hand-dyed and hand-spun, to create unique accessories and casual jewellery: woven, felted and knitted.

Maggie Preston applies batik designs to her individual hand-dyed silk scarves.

Both artists also explore local landscape in their loose, expressive mixed media paintings. Linda also makes original prints.

Kay Stowell has been working with glass for over 10 years. She takes the local landscape and animals as the inspiration for her fused glass projects, which try to showcase the beauty of glass.

Kay and Linda took a break from Derbyshire Open Arts in 2018 but are looking forward to sharing their latest work at Brookfold in 2019, along with new artist Maggie.

All three artists display their work together at Brookfold, a quirky architect-designed barn conversion and smallholding in a spectacular fellside setting. Kay will offer have-a-go glassmaking sessions, while Linda will provide weaving and spinning demonstrations. Maggie will show how she makes her unique silk designs.

There’ll be a huge range of artwork on display, from unique cards by all three artists, bags, hats and scarves, through home décor in fused glass, (mirrors, dishes, wall plaques); handmade yarns, original prints and mixed media paintings.

You can stroke the friendly native-breed Shetland sheep and their new lambs, watch the heritage-breed chickens, and inspect the Dyers’ Garden of vegetable dye plants and flowers, then handle the wool fleece in all stages of production, before enjoying home-made cakes, biscuits and tea.

It’s quite an adventure to find and reach Brookfold, up single-track lanes, but there’s plenty of parking space on site and a warm welcome when you arrive.
