Bernard Carter - 57

Location: Buxton / Genre: Botanical Illustrator

Artist Statement

My watercolour technique is unusually dense to create bold images that very much give a 'pick of the paper' effect which works extremely well for botanical paintings, giving them a real life-like quality. This approach has earned me two Royal Horticultural Society Gold medals and a Best in Show award 2017 as well as work for their archives. I was a founder member of the Eden Project Florilegium Society and have had work published world-wide.

My forte in botanicals is to depict the real thing as would be seen in nature and not perfect specimens. Therefore, I tend to paint leaves especially, in ragged, chewed and curled conditions which often gives them a sculptural effect and produces unique images
