Artist Statement

Colour, its potential to excite the eye, engage the heart and transmute mood, is central to my work.

Working intuitively, my pieces are abstract, often inspired by a sense of place, season or time, generally in series, large scale on canvas and board or smaller on paper and continually evolving. Painting and mono printmaking can become integrated – so a piece which begins as a painterly screenprint may be scratched and worked into, using a range of mixed media and collage. Some pieces assume the name of the prominent colour, ‘Red Energy’ for instance and ‘Orange’ exhibited and sold in the Royal Scottish Academy Open in Edinburgh, 2018.

As with Rothko, ‘shapes begin as unknown adventures in an unknown space’.

My studio overlooking Etherow Country Park, Compstall, near Stockport is where I spend much of my time. I am an associate of Castlefield Gallery in Manchester and a member of Hotbed Press, Salford, Forartis, and Art up Close.

As an invitee to Castlefield Gallery’s New Art Space, Barton Square, Trafford Centre, Greater Manchester, I am excited to currently be setting up studio and an exhibition space there.

‘Castlefield Gallery’s New Art Spaces is an initiative to create dynamic project spaces for artists, artist collectives and artist development agencies. Making use of temporarily vacant retail, office and light industrial units, New Art Spaces provides opportunities for emerging creatives to incubate their practices, produce work and showcase new art to local communities. Castlefield Gallery currently runs New Art Spaces in Bolton, Leigh, and the Trafford Centre’.

I have exhibited widely in the northwest and have work in private collections in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Australia & New Zealand
